What is FOSS?

Free and open source software (FOSS) simply refers to softwares (computer operating systems, applications and programs) considered to be alternatives to proprietary ones. 'Proprietary' in this context means not conforming to open systems standards, that puts a user (customer) at the mercy of the person or company (vendor) that sold the software. In this setup, user does not have the right to study, develop and redistribute the software.
