ADVISORY: Safety Precautions When Using Public Wi-Fi Networks ![]()
When connecting to public Wi-Fi networks, everyone is strongly encouraged to follow the following safety precautions:
1. If possible, avoid using public Wi-FI. If not, understand that using public Wi-Fi is risky. Everything you do online can be intercepted by hackers, especially when using public Wi-Fi that may not have strong encryption.
2. Do not do online banking or any sensitive computing while on public WiFi. Hackers on public networks can capture your personal information and passwords.
3. Avoid visiting unsecured websites such as pirate sites because these sites can also steal your information. Websites are often considered secure if they begin with “https” instead of simply “http”.
4. Using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) can help provide a layer of protection against malicious actors while using public Wi-Fi. A VPN can encrypt your data in a way that hackers can not decrypt, keeping your data safe even if they intercept it.
